Is DSL Service for You?

You want your DSL service to be fast, dependable, and reasonably priced. So, how do you find what you want and need?

First of all, are you specifically looking for DSL (from a telephone company), or simply any type of broadband that will give you high speeds? Do you know the difference?

Where does broadband fit in here? Broadband is simply another word for high speed internet. Broadband is available via coax cable (your cable TV company), satellite, DSL, fiber optic cable, cellular, Wi-Fi or Mi-Fi.

Types of DSL Service - Do You Know the Difference?

DSL comes in several different varieties, each carrying a digital signal without interfering with the voice service.

  • ADSL - (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) - ADSL is what typical residential customers use. It provides faster download than upload speeds, and with the use of a splitter, can be used for voice service over the same telephone line coming into your home.
  • SDSL - (Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) - SDSL has equal download an upload speeds and is suited more for businesses than residential users. Video conferencing is an example of a type of application companies might use which requires higher upload speeds.
  • IDSL - Provides data transmission through existing copper telephone lines and bypasses the telephone company's switch that processes voice communication (analog). In essence, it transmits data via a data network instead of a voice network, unlike the more common DSL which most residential use where they can use their telephone on the same line.
  • HDSL - (High data rate Digital Subscriber Line) HDSL is symmetrical, meaning that it has an equal amount of bandwidth to go in both directions. It uses twisted-pair wires, can generate up to 1.5 Mbps in both directions (T1/E1 data rates), but can be supported only up to 15,000 feet. Therefore, it is an ideal solution for digital local loops, school campus', and such.
  • VDSL - (Very High data rate Digital Subscriber Line) - Can support HDTV, VoIP, and internet access from one connection. It is required for such high bandwidth applications. You can find these services available via AT&T U-Verse and Verizon FiOS.
  • XDSL - XDSL is an abbreviation for all types of DSL.

How Much Speed Do You Need?

The most common DSL service provided to the majority homes is the ADSL variety. It delivers anywhere from 256 Kbits per second up to 40 Mbits per second in the download direction (to your computer). The average home user probably gets from 1.5 to 6 megabits per second with most DSL service providers lowest cost plans. Generally, this is enough for most people.

DSL Without Phone Service

Commonly called naked DSL, or dry loop DSL, it does not require a customer to have telephone service to their premises. So many people today have ditched their traditional phones in favor of their loved wireless phones. There is no need to pay your local phone company for service you will not use.
