Business DSL for Your Organization
You may be considering business DSL for your small business, home office, or perhaps even for your home.
If you run high bandwidth applications that the typical ADSL line simply cannot accommodate anymore, we can help you there too.
Your might even be in need of a more dedicated solution to give you more than the 56 KBPS which typical small business DSL can supply.
Let's look at your options.
How Business Internet Service Stacks Up
First, a regular home phone line is a DS-0 line in which you can get 56 KBPS of data or voice, or 64 kbit/s clear channel. This is how you receive common ADSL service if you choose so for your business DSL. DSL speed can vary to up to 7.1Mbps.
For the higher dedicated lines, DS-0 circuits are built upon as separate channels with a combined higher bandwidth available. For example, a DS-1 (same as T1) is just 24 DS-O circuits all bundled together on one T-1 circuit, thus giving you a dedicated DS-1, or T1 line. You can allocate these DS-0 channels in any combination for voice and/or data. If you allocate all 24 lines to data you will get 1.544 MBPS in both directions for internet. The result - super high speed!
With 24 DS-0 lines (which form the DS-1 or T1) allocated for voice only, you can have all 24 lines connected to the long distance carrier. Each circuit can be allocated as desired for:
- Outbound
- Toll-free
- Bi-directional
- Local service
How DS-1 lines (T1) Can Be Used for Business Class Internet
T1 PRI Voice Service - only 23 channels are dedicated to either voice or data with the remaining 24th channel to be used for things like a local phone network, caller id, or an automatic hold queue. Call centers use this type of setup.
Integrated T1 Service - both Voice and Internet allocated in any number up to 24 per T1 circuit, and each available to do its own thing.
Point-to-Point T1 Service - for companies or offices than need constant connectivity with another. This adds a second loop and higher monthly cost, but voice calls and/or data transfers between the two is unlimited with 1.5 MBPS (full duplex speed).
Frame Relay Service - for constant connectivity between 2 or more locations. Sub-T1 speeds can be chosen between each separate office and the host office, thus reducing the cost.
Virtual Private Networks - VPNs, as they are called, allow computers to network together from remote locations. Communication is encrypted to enforce a high security level.
DS-3 lines (T3)
A DS-3 line offers 3- 45 MBPS speed on a dedicated circuit. DS-3 is equivalent to 28 T1 lines, and gives the capability of 672 64Kbps channels which can be configured in any fashion to accommodate (DS3 Voice) or (DS3 PRI). It can be used by thousands of users at the same time. If your business has extremely high data traffic, then DS-3 may be right for you.
What Speeds of Business Class Internet is Available?
- T-1 = 1.544 megabits per second (24 DS0 lines)
- T-3 = 43.232 megabits per second (28 T-1s)
- OC-3 = 155 megabits per second (100 T-1s)
- OC-12 = 622 megabits per second (4 OC3s)
- OC-48 = 2.5 gigabits per seconds (4 OC12s)
- OC-192 - 9.6 gigabits per second (4 OC48s)
Business DSL - Your deciding factors
Some factors in deciding what type of dsl service and equipment you need are:
- What do you need to accomplish to maintain and grow your business?
- What necessary applications do you need in order to conduct and grow your business?
- What is the size of your organization or user base?
- How much are you spending for Internet?
- How much are you spending for local and long distance service?
